Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh sets off for Panchkula by road

See the route he will take: through pockets of Dera followers

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has started by road from his “dera” in Sirsa to reach Panchkula for the court verdict in the rape case in the afternoon today.

According to the local police, his cavalcade started around 8 am from the Dera Sacha Sauda headquarters. The road connecting the dera to National Highway 9 in Sirsa district has been cleared of all traffic, including cyclists.The Haryana police, lead by senior officers, is expected to accompany the motorcade to ensure safety during the transit.The route to be taken by the Dera chief has been submitted by its management in writing to the police – Sirsa-Fatehabad-Bhuna-Uklana-Narwana-Kaithal-Dhand-Kurukshetra-Ambala-Dera Bassi-Zirakpur-Panchkula – all through Haryana.There are several pockets along this route that have high concentrations of Dera followers.Ever since the Dera chief on Thursday morning tweeted his intention of attending the court hearing, the authorities had been in touch with the Dera management asking for his travel plan. However, this was conveyed only late in the night.All this while there had been speculation about whether the accused in the rape case will appear in court, which is a must on the date the verdict has to be delivered.There was also speculation on his mode of travel, whether he would travel by road or helicopter.
