Solan, August 5
Incessant rain crippled normal life in several parts of Himachal, triggering landslides and causing damage to roads at several places. The Chandigarh-Shimla highway was blocked near Jabli since 3 am where four-laning work is underway due to big and small landslides at around 15 places between Solan and Timber Trail.Indiscriminate excavation of the hills without building adequate-height retaining walls is stated to be the reason for frequent landslides on this stretch. As the walls have failed to support the damaged hills, loose strata has been giving way after heavy rains. The movement of the vehicles was severally hit and huge traffic jam was visible on the highway where apple-laden trucks were part of the vehicles struck on the road.Parwanoo DSP Bhisham said work was underway to clear the road and one-way traffic was made operational at 10 am. Though project-executing company GR Infra Limited has pressed its heavy machinery into service to clear the blockades, the operation is likely to take some time even as long queues of vehicles have piled up on the highway.Vehicular traffic has also been diverted from the Bhojnagar-Kumarhatti and Jangeshu routes to ease traffic congestion. The people in Shimla, Solan and upper areas remained without newspapers, milk, vegetables and bread as the supplies did not reach. However, the Kiratpur-Manali road, which was blocked due to a landslide near Hanogi Temple late last night, was cleared for traffic today morning.
